Substantive
or Comprehensive Editing
focuses on the overall structure of the project. This involves
proper analysis of the content, writing style and intent of
the project. This type of editing can be accomplished by closely
reviewing each line of the manuscript and may include rewrites
and/or restructuring of sentences or ideas. Substantive editing
also establishes whether the purpose of the project is well-understood
for its intended audience.
Copyediting
focuses on the grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, word
choice, wordiness, etc…of the project. Copyediting is
performed at a heavy, medium or light level depending upon
the needs of the project. This type of editing also focuses
overall flow, clarity and consistency.
Proofreading
occurs after the editing process. It is final run-through
of the project to correct any missed grammatical, punctuation
or spelling errors.
Manuscript
